Baked Chick Peas / Baked Garbanzo Beans

Baked Chick Peas

Exam time has started and the pressure on the kids makes them binge on fried delights more often. At these times it becomes our responsibility to make sure that the kids eat proper diet and eat healthy snacks at regular intervals. These baked chick peas is one such healthy snack that the kids would love to munch on. My Grandmom and mom roasted them over the stove top but ever since I got the oven I have been roasting the chick peas in the oven only. It consumes very less oil and makes an absolutely guilt free snack.

Baked Chick Peas / Baked Garbanzo Beans

You’ll need:

Chick peas / Garbanzo beans (Dry)  – 1 cup

Lemon Juice – 2 tsp

Red chilli powder – 2 tsp

Coriander powder – 1 tsp

Garam Masala powder – 1 tsp

Oregano / mixed herbs – 1/2 tsp

Sugar – 1/2 tbsp

Salt – to taste

Oil – 3 tbsp

Method:

Soak the chick peas over night in enough water. Pressure cook with salt till they are soft when pressed between the fingers. In case you are able to get canned chick peas you can skip this step.

In a wide bowl whisk together all the other ingredients till smooth. Add the cooked chick peas and mix well. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours.

Preheat the oven to 220 Degrees C. I used the tray that I used for my Pizza. If you don’t happen to have one arrange the marinated beans on an aluminium foil. Bake for 1 hour. After 1/2 hour I opened the oven and shook the pan to help them bake evenly. Mine got done in 50 min flat.

Don’t bake them longer as the beans will become hard on cooling back to room temperature. Store in a tight container and enjoy this guilt free snack as you wish.

Notes:

  • If you don’t have lemon juice use amchur powder instead.

  • Adding sugar will give a nice golden baked effect to the beans as it caramelizes during baking and will help in making them crunchy.

  • Resist the temptation to make for longer time if the peas appear a bit soft. They continue to cook from the heat till it comes to room temperature.

  • Oven timings may vary accordingly.

  • The choice of marinating  is aplenty and you can come with your variation.
